After Your Surgery

  1. The day of the surgery
    • You have had enough excitement for one day. Please go directly home and stay off your foot.
    • Keep the foot mildly elevated.

  2. Medication
    • Take two Advil or Tylenol before the anesthetic wears off.

  3. Drainage and mild bleeding is normal
    • A small amount of drainage, about 1 or 2 inches in size, will occur through the dressing. This is normal and will dry by the next day.
    • If significant bleeding occurs please call the office.

  4. If the dressing gets wet
    • You may purchase a shower cover from our office to help keep the dressing and surgical site dry.
    • Should the dressing become accidentally wet, you should remove it and redress the site with Neosporin Cream and sterile gauze.

  5. Healing time
    • The time required to heal the surgical site will depend upon the size and location of the wound.
    • When located under bony prominences wart excisions may heal slower. Our dressing will help keep pressure off the wound to allow for optimal healing.

After The 4th Post-Op Day

  • You may remove the dressing after the fourth postoperative day, unless instructed otherwise by the Doctor. A surgical dressing, which sticks to the wound, can be loosened with Hydrogen Peroxide or tap water. This may foam slightly when contacting dry blood. Please do not continue to bathe the wound with Hydrogen Peroxide after the dressing is removed.

  • After the first dressing change you may use a Band-Aid and Neosporin cream to cover the wound. This should be changed at least once a day. Always change immediately after bathing. Keep covered at all times until instructed otherwise by your doctor.

Contact The Office If...
Please contact the office if you notice excessive bleeding, develop a fever, or have any questions. If the office is closed, a message will give instructions on how to contact the doctor.
